Course Description
There are various kinds of employee movements
which the HR managers of today resort to. The most common among them
are - Job Rotation, Promotion, Transfer & Separation. Separation is a
movement wherein the employee leaves the organization while in all the
other movements, the employee moves within the organization itself.
Job
Rotation, if handled sensitively, can also prove to be a motivational
tool, wherein an employee is moved from one job to another at the same
level. By doing so, not only does the employee get benefitted but also
the organization prepares itself for challenges ahead, by making its
employees multi-skilled.
To fill up its vacant positions, an
organization may resort to promotions. However, it is imperative for
organizations to have a sound promotion policy. Often, it is seen that
that, absence of a sound promotion policy leads to frustration among
employees. The criteria for promotion, be it seniority, or merit, or
both, should be properly defined. In the corporate sector, the
environment is fast paced, wherein the culture is highly performance
driven – the culture is essentially – Perform or Perish. Promotion not
only helps to motivate its performers but also enables organizations to
fill up its vacant positions internally.
Transfers, is yet another
employee movement that helps to fill up vacant positions in an
organization. However, the organization should clearly spell out the
basis or the criteria for transfer, thereby rolling it into a policy.
The transfers could be temporary or permanent in nature and are
generally not accompanied by a pay hike. However, there could be case,
based on the business need, wherein an employee may get promoted and
transferred to a location for setting up the operations, as a part of
the organization's expansion plan.
Separation, in an organization
is inevitable. Though it can be controlled to an extent, it can however,
not be avoided. Separation involves exiting of an employee and thus
entails outward employee movement for various reasons. Resignation
(forced or induced) is the most common mode of separation. However,
other modes of separation include lay-offs, dismissal, suspension,
retrenchment and Superannuation. To make the exit graceful for
employees, the organization can launch Voluntary Retirement Schemes
(VRS) but it also has its own merits & demerits. All said and done,
the separating employee must leave the organization in good taste as
these employees are image carriers of the organization.
