Course Description
Computer architecture is a set of disciplines that describes
the functionality, the organization and the implementation of computer
systems; that is, it defines the capabilities of a computer and its
programming model in an abstract way, and how the internal organization
of the system is designed and implemented to meet the specified
capabilities. Computer architecture involves many aspects, including
instruction set architecture design, micro-architecture design, logic
design, and implementation. Some fashionable (2011) computer
architectures include cluster computing and non-uniform memory access
The
computer organization is concerned with the structure and behaviour of
digital computers. The main objective of this subject to understand the
overall basic computer hardware structure, including the peripheral
devices
In spite of variety and pace in the computer
field, certain fundamental concepts apply consistently throughout. The
application of these concepts depends upon the current state of
technology and the price/performance objectives of the designer. The aim
of the subject is to provide a through discussion of the fundamentals
of computer organization and architecture and to relate these to
contemporary design issues
A computer system is like any
other system, consists of an inter-related set of components. The system
is best characterized in terms of structure-the way in which they are
interconnected and function-operation of individual component. Each
major component can be described further by decomposing it into its
major sub-components and describing their structure and function
Computer
architecture is the conceptual design and fundamental operational
structure of a computer system. It is the technical drawings and
functional description of all design requirements (especially speeds and
interconnections), it is how to design and implement various parts of a
computer focusing largely on the way by which the central processing
unit (CPU) operates internally and how it accesses addresses in memory
